Wild Blue Yonder

Feels like that's where I've been...I know I have been remiss about both posting and visiting. I hope to remedy that soon

Remorse about being remiss. We forgive you! Thu 26-Jul-2007 21:10

This is great. As Click asked, were you up there?
(And you haven't been nearly as remiss as me...)

Dead Man's Hollow

From Great Natural Areas in Western Pa by Stephen Ostrander :

Legends about monstrous snakes, festering corpses, misty spectors, gun-toting bootleggers and encampments of hobos kept this place wild by scaring away respectable folks. The "dead man" of the hollow recalls shopkeeper Robert McClure, who was robbed, abducted and killed in the ravine by bandidts in 1881
Monster stories may have been concocted to keep away authorities from stumbling onto hidden treasures or illicit activities. During Prohibition bootleggers operated stills in the hollow. The ruins of a sewer pipe factory became a shanty town for homeless people during the Depression

Now a side trip from the Youghiogheny bike trail, it is always deserted and a cool quiet spot to walk the dogs in the heat of the summer

Brrrrr... spooky! Sun 24-Jun-2007 23:16

The name of a place like this deserves to be pronounced correctly:
Dead Man's Holler

Beautifully done! One can also appreciate the plant's symmetry. A very basic link about this subject can be found at: http://maven.smith.edu/~phyllo/CourseMaterial/Teachingmodules/phyltut1.html Fri 15-Jun-2007 16:39
